Germany. Third Reich Garrison Standard
HISTORY. Recklinghausen is medium size and is the northernmost city in the heavily industrialized Ruhr-Area of Germany. The industrialized area of South Recklinghausen was captured by the US 137th Infantry on 1 April 1945.
This rare standard measures approximately 62” (1575mm) x 48” (1219mm). Double sided, multi-piece constructed of a large black rayon swastika sewn upon a white cotton circle and sewn on a red field. In the upper corner closest to the spine is the garrison identification patch measuring approximately 8 1/2” (216mm) x 6” (152mm) and made of white embroidered letters on black felt trimmed in white cord brocade. The entire standard is trimmed on three side with 2” silver-aluminum fringe. The original standard had seven cloth loops for suspension, but they were cut most likely by the liberating GI who brought it back. Several of the cut loops remain, while a couple were torn from the standard leaving a tear of approximately 2” were one was. Mild soiling, but the colors are still bright. Excellent++ Rare item.
