Germany. Luftwaffe Officer's M-43 Cap
Germany. Luftwaffe Officer's M-43 Cap
Constructed of dark blue / gray wool, fold down side and back panels with a scalloped front with double, closure buttons. The back and side panels were designed to be folded down to protect the wearers ears and neck and the scalloped front section could be secured with the button closed under the wearer’s chin. The top crown edge is piped in bright, interwoven silver/aluminum cord. The front center of the cap has a machine embroidered, second pattern, (circa 1936/1937-1945), EM /NCO Luftwaffe eagle in silvery/grey threads on a cut-out blue/grey wool base positioned above a separate machine embroidered, national tri-color cockade in black, red and white threads (Not uncommon to put a EM / NCO eagle on an officer cap when the officer version is not available). Insignia looks to be hand sewn to the cap. The cap has an extended, cloth covered, forward visor with an internal stiffener. The interior of the cap is fully lined in gray rayon twill. The lining is marked with the cap size in a faint ink stamp "58". There appears to some other markings, but the fading makes them unreadable. The cap show moderate wear and the lining has separated about half the circumference of the interior of the cap. Interesting example.
