Germany. Heer (Army) Pioneer Officer Visor
Germany. Heer (Army) Pioneer Officer Visor
HISTORY. The primary role of pioneer units was to assist other arms in tasks such as the construction of field fortifications, military camps, bridges and roads. During WW2, pioneer units were used extensively by all major forces, both on the front line and in supporting roles.
The visor is constructed of smooth field-grey wool with a forest-green doeskin wool cap band. The field-gray wool has some nips and shows wear. The cap is trimmed with three bands of black piping, with one band at the top and one each at the top and bottom of the cap band, indicating a Pioneer. At the peak of the cap is a Wehrmacht-style German national eagle and just below is a band bearing a tri-color cockade surrounded by a second pattern oak leaf wreath, constructed of aluminum. The cap band is flanked by pebbled, silvered, magnetic metal buttons holding in place the standard decorative silver chinstrap. The interior bears a light-brown leather sweatband perforated with ventilation holes at the front, and securely held in place by a row of machine stitching. The interior is fully lined with a champagne colored satin liner. The lining is covered by a splattered black material, sometimes done to positively identify the visor. Maker marked “Viro” a rare visor maker with a superb reputation and Owner Name “Bionier Bedi”. Overall Excellent+.
