Germany. K98 Bayonet
Germany. K98 Bayonet
HISTORY. Mauser Karabiner 98 kurz ("carbine 98 short") was the standard issue infantry rifle of the German Wehrmacht during WWII. It was chambered for 8mm Mauser, and was one of the last members of a long line of Mauser-designed bolt-action rifles. To accompany the shorter rifle, the S84/98 III bayonet was developed, which was shorter than previous variants, and usable as a fighting knife or utility knife.
Standard K98 bayonet. All the stamps are correct. Double acceptance stamp on the pommel, single stamp on the back of the handle and the tip of the scabbard. The scabbard is marked with the makers name, “Clemen u. Jung”, manufactured date “1938” and scabbard #”5121”. The blade is marked with the maker S-code, “S/177G” (Eanst Pack & Sohne, Solingen) and blade #”5562C”. Obviously no matching numbers. Bakelite handle is perfect. Blade is excellent. Scabbard has a few small dents, but there is no rust. Overall a typical combat bayonet that is very well preserved.
